| Great Interview Today |
| Thursday, August 31, 2006 |

I had a great interview today with LSG Sky Chefs. I think this is an opportunity that plays to my strong suite of logistics/operations and finance combined.
I walked in to this one with the expectation that it was not going to be what I was really interested in, but as they described the problems and opportunities, I really got in to it. I have some really great ideas of how to proceed, pulling a lot of ideas from my past and applying it to this opportunity.
I know I was one of eight that they are talking to, some of which were internal candidates which in essence works against me, but I hope I impressed them to bring me back in the next step when they cull it down to two.
I did all of the things right as far as I could tell, but most important I was me.
I guess I learned something at Fish last week. I made the decision to be there and be there with the right attitude, to engage my client, to have some fun.
I've done my part on this one, now it is up to the powers above! Wish me well!! |

"Danielle DiMartino: Weaker labor market could have broad impact"
Boy now that is a headline that is getting me more nervous. In her article Danielle finds year over year payrolls down, and an uptick in July's unemployment rate a serious concern. Housing construction is down and in places like Florida you can't give away homes, especially now in the storm season.
If we hit a recessionary spot now, there will be mayhem as we have not made any gains in the last 5 years to take on a loss from 2000/ 2001.
I have not completely dug myself out from the 9 months I spent on the street during the aftermath of 9-11. Please not again. |

| Yin and Yan - A very down day for me |
| Wednesday, August 30, 2006 |
I guess my world is spinning a little this evening. I had expected to hear an up or down from one of my major targets today. In stead of an offer or a rejection, I was told they would consider bringing me on with some form of a contract basis. Although they are not even sure at what rates or even when they would do that.
I guess I need to move on to the next thing and focus my energy and thoughts on what that may bring in. This has been a very disappointing day for me.
I know I have an interview tomorrow so I guess I need to be squared away as possible for that.

| Busy Week |
|
It is only Monday and it looks like it is turning to a busy week. So far I have been able to schedule a head-hunter interview, a panel interview and I have already had a phone screening interview with an internal recruiter. I am expecting to add more to the schedule as the week goes on.
It would be nice though if I would get the offer from the consulting opportunity and then the pressure would be off of me and I could be in a better position to pick and choose who I want to talk to. Actually, I really want the consulting position, I think it is the thing that I would be able to sink my teeth in to and really make something out of. (Hey North Highland are you listening?) |

| The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog's butt |
| Friday, August 25, 2006 |
Dear Dogs,
The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help, because I fall faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for 47 years, canine attendance is not required.
The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog's or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough! |

| Market about to Pop |
| Thursday, August 24, 2006 |
Rumors running around the FENG Meeting Tuesday night says the market is about to pop with some really great positions to post in the next two weeks or so. I guess summertime is finally coming to an end and we are going to start seeing quality positions open up in the Sr Financial community.
In fact the stuff showing up in the last week or so has been promising. While I have interviewed and I am waiting to hear final thumbs up or down from the consulting firm I have interviewing with, I have a number of other pieces that seem to be in the works.
A few of the Point Click Shoot and keep Texas happy (unemployment compensation folks) happy, have even set up some interviews. Talk about the odds of shooting craps, I think the market is good and getting better in Dallas.
Companies of the week, LSG Skychef, North Highland Company, Rexel USA, Michaels Stores, Chep USA, McKesson, Hagaar, Rent A Center.
Hey folks if you are reading any of this give me a shout. I would like to know if I am hitting a target with anybody, particularly recruiters. Thanks! |

| How I spent my summer vacation |
| Monday, August 21, 2006 |
I guess all of us have had to write that theme upon return to school at least one time in our lives. I have a friend who has quite a story to tell, and it is non fiction.
Abbey donated her kidney to her father-in-law, recently adopted a wonderful baby girl, and spends her spare time teaching underprivileged children figure skating. Full time she is a teacher in RISD. Abbey is in my top 10 list of wonderful people and her husband isn't a bad guy either.
So why is she in my job search blog? I think she can give us all a lesson on giving to the community and to family. Way to go Abbey Rosenbaum

I think things have heated up for me lately, so I apologize for not Blogging a lot in the last few days. I am in the throws of a heavy interview schedule with a company and I am trying to line up all the pieces that will be required to land this opportunity.
Just the process of completing the application, background criminal check form, EEOC forms, work history etc is enough to keep you busy. I have a hard time remembering what I made 15 years ago, much less what phone number for them to call to verify employment of a company that has changed, moved, and is under new ownership. Of course that was only one company, so multiply that by whomever I worked for in the last 15 years and we are talking major league research.
Of course this also comes at a time when I am running around the metroplex trying to get the last things needed for the kids and spouse to be back in school and the initial meetings with teachers, administrators and a whole new after school schedule for ballet and other extracurricular activities.
Next time (and actually starting now) I am putting a document together with all of the possible historical questions one could ask about a prior employer. |

| Thursday, August 17, 2006 |
I had the pleasure of meeting the principal of Petit Fours the yesterday. What a great concept these people have and I really hope they succeed.
I stopped in the store to wait for my daughter to be dropped off at her local high school (she is in Disd's Arts Magnet Ballet Program), and started a conversation with Carolyn Key. What a great concept, business plan and expectations. Petit Fours is located on McKinney just north of Blackburn and is a purveyor of super desserts for people who are entertaining.
The most important part... (drum roll) she could articulate her plan in under 90 seconds, clearly, concisely and with great enthusiasm.
She truly was the walking talking and breathing commercial for herself and the business she is trying to grow.

| Tuesday, August 15, 2006 |
Went to Career Connection this AM and ran in to Bob as I expected, but also ran in to another friend that I did not expect to see. While it is great to see old friends and having a friend at a group like Career Connection always cuts some of the intimidation down, you look at it with a melancholy view.
Shoot there goes another chance to network with someone who is gainfully employed hoping they can help you get in the door somewhere. Now their energy is going to be more focused on getting themselves in the door somewhere.
Of course a news article today that Walmart sees first profit drop in 10 years can also scare you. Interestingly enough same store sales increased 1.5% at Walmart and 2.3% at Sam's Club, while major rival Target increased 4.5% for stores open at least a year.
Some of the profit drop was from discontinuing operations, but the powerhouse that Walmart has become has created some reason for concern.
Energy and Gasoline prices were blamed for much of the downturn. |

| My brother works for the competition |
|
I had an interesting phone interview yesterday that I may have blown. I started asking questions about the company and their business model. I wanted to make sure I understood the market and who they competed against.
After a few questions the interviewer (and hiring manager) stated I was fairly knowledgable about the market and industry, where did you find this out, it is not in your background.
I admitted that my brother was an officer in a larger competing firm, and we had discussed his firm from time to time. (Oh and I was a customer of his firm, as well as a critic when they did things poorly!) The other side of the conversation was akwardly silent for a few moments and I heard the scratching of her pen wildly taking a note.
Question to all: Is there a problem if your brother is a competitor? Is it an advantage?
A little history. my brother and I worked oposite each other during our days at FedEx, he was finance, I was pricing and marketing and we were poised to be on opposite sides of the fence. |

| Pimp My Daughter Babysitting |
| Wednesday, August 09, 2006 |
From the shameless commerce division of Seeker, I am presenting PMD (Pimp My Daughter) Babysitting Service.
I guess as long as I am not working some one has to bring home the bacon. Actually it started with a number of my former co-workers looking for a babysitter and asking me if she could babysit for them some evenings. She became so popular, I was stopped in the elevators at my former employer and asked if my daughter was available for the x night. Others taking the ride with us not knowing what it was about gave me strange looks. I finally had to explain she was a babysitter and I was not doing anything immoral or illegal.
But I was "pimping" her services so after joking around, we called it PMD Babysitting.
Oh by the way, I only let her babysit for people we know, I have checked out, or I will run a criminal background investigation on you. She is great with kids, and has taken a babysitting course. (Mom and Dad check in regularly on her) North Dallas, West Plano only please. We do deliver and pickup. |

| Getting a Little Traction |
| Tuesday, August 08, 2006 |
Not sure why, perhaps it had to do with the new candle I lit this week, but I seem to be getting some traction today. I have gotten a few call backs and setting up a couple of screening interviews. Ok it is not offers in hand, but it is the first step.
Consulting could be in my future, so could returning to a functional or field finance position. Right now the consulting is sounding more interesting.. but the road there is going to be tough to plow through. It will be some hard trabajo. Oh, by he way, did I ever mention I am multilingual. I even had a green card (FMN3) to work in Mexico. I ran a logistics system that fed a Maquiladora operation in Reynosa Mexico.I was required to feed physical supply to the plant and take finished goods across the border to the US and distribute to the entire US and Canada. |

| Is consulting in my future? |
| Monday, August 07, 2006 |
I had an interesting conversation this morning with Mark a fellow FENG member. He works for what would be considered a small to mid tier consulting organization. We were introduced by my former boss Howard from DPSU (Cadbury Schweppes) and currently at Intuit.
It is interesting to find a lot of organizations look a person like me because of my supply chain skills even more so than my financial skills. I am told I was a strong operator, with good analytical skills and great people and leadership skills. (Of course they have been too kind.)
In the meantime, I am going to continue to pursue that as a potential opportunity along with other more traditional companies.
Companies of interest to me include: SWA (Southwest Airlines), Michaels Stores, McAfee, Rexel, Excel Logistics, Crossmark, McKesson, Kinko's, Pepsi/Frito, Yum Brands, Mary Kay, Beauticontrol, Zix, Stevens Transport, American Airlines, Zales, Friedman's Jewelers, Eurocopter, and more to come. |

As a current job seeker, it sometimes is difficult to explain to anyone what it is you are doing right now. I tell people I am available to the market, while others talk about being in transition.
Either way it is painful to explain to people some times and so I can relate to poor Jim hiding in the background.

Well with this Blog, I am getting over it. However since it is still August and this is North Texas where we have had 20+ days at 100 degrees or more, I will still be sitting in the shade. |

| Who is Ima Gopher? |
| Thursday, August 03, 2006 |
After the great piece by Dennis Smith in Career Builders Blog about the ZunchWagon, I have to come clean about Ima Gopher.
Ima Gopher was a business started by my spouse when we first moved to Plano and she was burned out on teaching. Her personal concierge business was designed to run errands for overworked people with sufficient income to afford her services. She would house-sit for people that need to be at work but were expecting service people to deliver or work in their homes, she would run errands, do shopping etc. In my parents day my father called the person who did these functions a wife, today we called it a personal concierge.
I still have the magnetic sign, I just need to update the phone number. |

Last night ran in to a friend I had not seen in a few months if not a year and he was asking how I was doing as 7-11. Regretfully I let him know I had departed.
The next words out of his mouth was we need someone with your background. We have terrible inventory problems and I think you are the person that can solve them. Get a resume to me in the morning, and I will take it to my boss the President of the Company.
Life is strange. I have been getting quite a few inquiries for my logistics/supply chain background lately rather than just my finance side of the world. I'm starting to believe having a hard core operations side of me may yet be of benefit.
If nothing else, I learned to talk to everyone, you never know where the next opportunity might just come from. |

| Life after State, Just about 30 Years Too Late |
| Wednesday, August 02, 2006 |
In today's pile of email was a note from my alumni association. They wanted me to know they have now worked out a deal with a well known college exam prep course provider to give alumni club members discounts on the course.
Yes, I could now get a discounted class for my GRE or GMAT exam. Thanks fella's you are about 30 years late. I already have my MBA, it is unlikely I need to take to TOEFL exam, and I really don't think I am headed to law school unless I magically win Texas' Lotto and I only play when the expected payoff is greater than $1.00. (If you do not understand what that means, I will be glad to give you a lesson in finance and probability. )
I should not completely complain about the university. My undergraduate department Business Logistics (now Supply Chain and information Technology) keep a job board running and I still get leads to follow.

| Is it time for me to change my name back to my Russian Roots? |
|
While I must admit I have an understanding wife and wonderfully adjusted teenage children, sometimes they forget that looking for a job is a full time job in itself.
They try to give dad some space but don't really understand why is dad going to meetings, lunches, meeting people for coffee at 4 bucks when he doesn't even drink coffee. Of course, in reality what they are really saying is "Why do I have to take the bus, you really aren't doing anything important anyway".
Of course there is allays the ballet lessons, movies with friends, school club meetings (even though it is summer) and other activities they need to go to. My spouse had to leave town so I worked out a schedule of who had to be where and when. At that point I realized I need to change my name. From now on my last name is Andropov, and my First will be Anpikup.
Yes, I am now known as Anpikup Andropov, the Russian chauffeur. |

| The Job Candle |
| Tuesday, August 01, 2006 |
I know this is not the way it is suppose to be done... but I figure a little extra help would not hurt. Attached is my Job Candle, on one side it says JOB on the other Trabajo, and in between are icons of hammers, wrenches, office equipment, shovel etc.
I started this tradition a few years ago when I was out of work and walking through a Hispanic food chain found in Houston and now Dallas/Ft Worth called Fiesta. I was getting desperate and did all I could think of to get a job. On a whim I bought the candle for about $0.50 and took it home and lit it. By the end of the week I had two offers in hand where I did not even have two interviews lined up when I bought the candle.
I have shared this tradition with my friends and compatriots, just to remind them that some one is thinking about them.
Does it really work? I am now on my 2nd candle and still no job. Each candle burns for about a week or so (also great when the power goes out for a long time like after a hurricane or ice storm.) |

| Another Great Day at Career Connection |
|
This morning there was another great day at Career Connection
Jim Curry (Merrill Lynch) and Charlie Zinger (Concentra) did a great role play composed of some 15 networking kinds of calls that Charlie had received over the last few months. What a great way to learn the gaffes and miss-steps before we take them ourselves.
I have to give credit though to the people who made those gaffes, they picked up the phone and made the calls. They didn't sit there with a 400 lb handset and not know what to do with it.
Lot's of great learning today. Thanks Jim and Charlie for your presentation.

| A note Indeed |

Not that I am shilling for the contacts, but I got a great note from the a Marketing Manager at Indeed.com today. I guess these folks are really out there reading the blogosphere.
Here it is:
Hi Jim,
I found your blog today and wanted to thank you for writing about Indeed.com. I’m glad you like it! Here’s a couple tips you might find useful in your job search:
Use the “Advanced Search” feature located next to the “Find Jobs” button. You’ll be able to specify exact keywords, company name and even distance from location you’re willing to travel. You can also use the “Refinements” setting located in the left margin. This margin will give you a breakdown of Companies, locations and job types related to your search Click on the “More Actions” link located at the end of any job listing you’re interested in. This will provide you with some very useful links that will help give you some background information on the company, salary, networking and location.
Hope that helps and thanks again for the recognition!
Sincerely, Sophie
Indeed one search. all jobs.
So I guess people do read Blogs. Now if it will help me find a job I will be in better shape.
Thanks for the note Sophie!!! |
