Career Connection
Career Connection is a great career and job search group in the Dallas Metroplex area. They have helped tens of thousands of people over the years find themselves and the next career move. While not a charity, the costs are very reasonable $10 to join, $10/month and they offer programming, jobsearch help, some counseling, and even a cup of Joe. The goup meets 10-12AM Tuesday Mornings (9:00 for newbies orientation) @ Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church (Don't worry no one is going to make you pray).

Dennis writes a blog for the talent aquisition portion of T-Mobile. Yes he is a company flack, but he is a good kind of company flack. (And no, I am not trying to suck up to him for a fee account, job, or even the latest phone, although I would accept all 3). Indeed | one search. all jobs.
    Monday, July 31, 2006
Not much of a day for Job Search for me. I did spend the day doing the point click and shoot to a few organizations. Started using a website called indeed: Indeed one search. all jobs.. This is a pretty good sight and I think it has a lot of merit.

Part of my problem today was children at home making lots of noise and the 2nd part is my call reluctance. I need to get over it already. I do great in a room full of people, I just can't lift that 200 lb handset.

Dr Pepper Museum - Waco, TX

Dr Pepper Museum - Waco, Texas - Home of Dr Pepper

Spent the day touring the DP museum today with my wife and children. We enjoyed touring around. Interesting place. We went out in the square and I knew a few of the people that had dedicated bricks. Most of the them I knew from my time as a contractor at Dr Pepper- 7-Up. Mike McGrath was President when I was there and John Tomesko was a SVP Bottler Sales (?) . I thought a lot of both of them.

Of course the trip was not all fun, we took my mother-out-law in to Waco to visit her half sister and brother-in-law. Dealing with octogenarian plus is not easy especially when they see the river Styx in the front windshield and it is getting closer all the time. Add dementia to the mix and you understand where we were.

I hope I have the courage to accept what will happen to me when I get to that point, understand aging is a process and it is not all good (nor is it all bad) and be able to accept that I will not always be able to do the things I can do today.

    Chinese Fortune
    Saturday, July 29, 2006
We had dinner this evening at a Chinese restaurant and my fortune cookie said I was about to have a very profitable transaction. Of course that came with the bill, who was the transaction suppose to be profitable for?

My wife's cookie said that even though are lives are on a roller coaster right now, life will even out shortly. I hope it is true!!

    Fencing Lessons
Over the last few weeks besides seeking employment, the temperature in N. Texas have taken a short break from the 103-110 degree days and I was able to spend some time with my older daughter mending fences and giving her fencing lessons.

When I told a colleague of mine about this they inquired if it was saber, epee, or foil. I had to explain it was hammer, wood, and steel poles. My neighborhood association required me to fix the fence around my back yard so We tore about half down and replaced it.

Oh, and the relationship between my daughter is what you would expect of a father and a teenage daughter, ok at times and I am the most unintelligent un-cool person in the world (or if not only second to her mother.)

Well as of last evening, can officially say I have completed this part of the job. I even had a neighbor who wanted to try the nail gun I rented so in perfect Tom Sawyer fashion, I encouraged him to give it a try.

Now the fence is done, the dog is happy, my house is not as much as an eyesore, and I can now rest my weary body.

    Possible Contract Position
    Friday, July 28, 2006
Got an email last night from one of the agencies I visited with Thursday and they have a possible opportunity for me. I spoke with them today and gave them the OK to submit my resume for position. Pay rate looks reasonable and is surely better than unemployment.

I guess this deal could last until the end of the year. The deal is not signed yet though, but I hope it comes through. I would be nice to be on a payroll if just for a while. I keep reminding my self of the Jim Kline version of Maslows needs hierarchy:

    1. Sleeping Indoors
    2. Eating regularly
    3. Having Air Conditioning in August.

All I can do now is wait and start doing any of the paperwork in advance.

    Lisa and Blogging
I met with Lisa from Career Connection this afternoon. It was really nice of her to buy my sandwich, but it was also not really necessary.

Lisa has asked me to help get Career Connection started in blogging. We are for the time being using Blogger to host. I don't know what kind of band width they will support, but I am sure at somepoint they will ask us to move it to our own server.

In the meantime it will be at http://careerconnection.blogspot.com. Lisa will have some work to do to make it have the same look and feel as the main Career Connection website ( http://www.careerconnection.org/ bit she has some folks on staff or available to help (sort of as I do. ) We really need to drive more people (not a good thing) or more companies (a much better thing) to help drive revenue to keep the doors open and budgets rolling. A good economy is not always good for all.

Lisa Miller is really a great person. A long time ago I use to think she was either Superwoman or sometimes a meglomaniac. However as I have gotten to know her and it has been 5 years, I know she is both a regular standup kind of person and Superwoman in the same package. Who'd of thought she has the same problems with her kids cleaning up after themselves as I do.

Anyway CC is on its way to blogging.

    Coffee at 4 Bucks
Had a great chance to follow through with meeting one of the FENG invites for coffee. I don't know if I wrote, but it was an old "boss" from my days at Dr Pepper. While I was only a contract employee we seemed to hit it off.

He is getting ready to leave his current position or rather they have told him it will be leaving him. In the meantime though he is passing my resume within his organization because he believes there will be an opportunity for a person with my talents and skills there.

So we had coffee, shared some personal news, traded leads and job search ideas and went our ways. A very productive 45 - 60 minutes.

    A small experiment
    Thursday, July 27, 2006
Tuesday night I went to a FENG meeting and networked with about 10 people. When I got home that evening, I wrote a short email to each one commenting on how much it was a pleasure to meet them or see them again, something about what we talked about and asking them to call on me if I could be of assistance in their search.

A very interesting thing came back. Notes from about 8 or 9 of the ten, two offers to meet for coffee or lunch, a few job leads, and requests from a number of people for a copy of my resume.

I really need to make sure I follow up with everyone I meet along the way right after I meet them and get contact information.

    Alittle History
    Wednesday, July 26, 2006
I guess I should give a little history here.

Until the 15th of June I was employed by my latest employer 7-Eleven, Inc. I was a Category Planning Manager where I was responsible for about a $2.4 Billion segment of the store revenue. My categories included all of tobacco and all non-food items except financial items like gift cards, money orders etc. (Please no comments about the food items not being edible and should have fallen in to my categories). SEI decided to make a number of changes including reducing OSG&A to try and make revenue and gross profit better match the ratio's (and bottom line) that they had promised to the parent corporation.

In a sense, they allowed me to make myself available to the market once again!

As security walked me out the door without even getting a chance to go to the mens room and relieve myself, I knew I had better get my buns working quickly.

I was home shortly after noon and by 5 PM I was contacting my friends, search firms, and others to share in my great opportunity.

I had a quick start... a few promissing opportunities, but then the summer duldrums set in. 4th of July week and summer vacation.

It seems like I can do it in my sleep and if I didn't have an objection to body art I would probly have the "Hi My Name is Jim" name tag tattoo on my chest.

Job hunting is really a drag some days.
